Paying Tribute to Our Founders and Instructors

We pay tribute to our founders, Kulsum, Adam and Hassan, as well as those who served alongside them over the years. Their commitment and dedication to the trade have inspired us to maintain high standards and never drop the ball. We salute our instructors – Peter (Pitchy) Chetty, Dino Gangen, Vernon Chetty, Michael Barnes, Calvin Viljeon, Salie Isaacs, and Adrian Carelse – for their contributions in making Family Driving School stand the test of time.

Our instructors have always been dedicated to teaching students not just how to drive, but also how to become responsible road users. We take pride in having developed a reputation for providing high-quality training that has earned us the trust of our students and the respect of our peers.

Legacy and Continuity

Tragically, we lost both our senior founders in the 2000s, but their ethos and legacy lived on through our continued passion for teaching. As the vehicle market shifted, we updated our fleet to Toyota Etios and later introduced new Suzuki Swifts in both manual and automatic transmissions. This marked a new chapter in our journey, with the next generation of Family Driving School leaders embracing the latest trends and technologies.

Early Years: A Humble Beginning

Our first office was located at Wetton Circle in Lansdowne, where we operated a fleet of iconic Volkswagen Beetles and Ford trucks. As the years went by, we adapted to changing times and moved our offices to College Road in Rylands Athlone. Our fleet evolved from 1980s Honda Ballads and Mazda 323 hatchbacks to Toyota Corollas, which became a staple in our fleet for many years.

A Legacy of Empowering Communities

Family Driving School has been a trusted partner in the driving training industry for over five decades. Founded by brothers Adam and Hassan, also known as Mr. Solomons, in the early 1970s, our mission was to deliver professional, cost-effective training to marginalized communities during the apartheid era.

Steering Through Our Journey Together

Expansion and Growth

The 1990s saw us expand our reach by establishing a second office in Mitchells Plain, allowing us to better serve the Southern Suburbs, Cape Flats, and surrounding areas. This marked the beginning of a new era of growth for us and more empowerment for our students. We take pride in having seen our students achieve their dreams, from becoming nurses and teachers to social workers, which has contributed to greater social upliftment in their communities.
