Driving in South Africa as a Tourist: What You Need to Know

🚙 Renting a Car in South Africa

Renting a car is the best way to explore South Africa, but there are a few things to keep in mind:

✔️ Requirements: Most rental companies require a valid driver’s licence, passport, and credit card. ✔️ Insurance: Always check insurance coverage—some rentals include basic insurance, but additional coverage may be needed. ✔️ Vehicle type: If you plan to visit game reserves or rural areas, consider renting a 4x4 for better handling. ✔️ Toll roads: Some highways have toll booths, so keep cash or a credit card handy.

💡 Tip: If you’re planning a self-drive safari, confirm whether your rental allows off-road driving.

🚗 Can You Drive in South Africa with a Foreign Licence?

Yes! Tourists with a valid foreign driver’s licence printed in English can legally drive in South Africa. However, if your licence is not in English, you’ll need an International Driving Permit (IDP).

✔️ Your licence must be valid for the full duration of your stay ✔️ If your licence doesn’t have a photo, carry your passport for verification ✔️ An IDP is required if your licence is in another language

💡 Tip: Always check with your car rental company beforehand to ensure your licence meets their requirements.

💡 Bonus Tip: Most vehicles in South Africa are right hand drive and that will take some getting used to if your left hand drive.

🚦 Understanding The Road Rules

Driving in South Africa is different from many other countries, so it’s important to familiarize yourself with local road rules:

Drive on the left-hand side – South Africa follows left-hand driving, similar to the UK and Australia. ✅ Traffic lights are called ‘robots’ – If someone mentions a robot, they mean a traffic light! ✅ Four-way stops operate differently – The first vehicle to arrive has priority at four-way stop intersections. ✅ Speed limits vary

  • Highways: 120 km/h

  • Secondary roads: 100 km/h

  • Urban areas: 60 km/h

  • National parks: 35-40 km/h

Seat belts are compulsory – All passengers must wear seat belts at all times. ✅ Mobile phone use is restricted – Only hands-free devices are allowed while driving.

💡 Tip: If traffic lights (robots) are malfunctioning due to load-shedding, treat the intersection as a four-way stop.
